Langholm Open 2019

For once the weather was perfect for golf. Over the past few years had wind and rain, completely washed out a number of times. It was coolish for the early starters with moisture on the greens which took some pace off the ball, but when they dried out they were fast.

There were visitors from Peebles, Hawick, Newcastleton, Lochmabon, Gifford, Alston Moor and Holland. More of this later.

In total 44 golfers of all standards, with Handicaps from 2 to 28. There were also seven players who had won the club Championship over many years.

Head Greenkeeper Douglas had an early start working on the greens and his work in the weeks previously brought comments of praise from members and visitors.

Derek Johnstone was first out and set a good target for the rest of the field, 37 points. His lead did not last long, Ed Turner in the second group went one better. One of the former champions Ian Borthwick, showed that he could rise to the occasion. After an iffy start when he dropped 7 shots in the first 6 holes, 10 pars gave him 39 points to take the lead. The youngster in the field Callum Jeffery came close with 38 points which include something all golfers have done which is missing a 2 inches putt, which is 5.08 centimetres for youngsters That does not sound so bad..

David Latimer Jr. looked, after nine holes that he was going to blow the field away with 24 points but it was David who was blown away by the course and finished with 37 points .As the players came in with moans about bad luck and missed putts it looked as if Sporty would hold on but there was a sting in the tail, Brian Porteous, another former Champion also returned 39 points but with 2 birdies on the back nine won with a better inward half.

1st Brian Porteous 39 points BiH

2nd Ian Borthwick 39 points

3rd Callum Jeffery 38 points BiH

4th Ed Turner 38 points

Scratch Derek Johnstone 30 points

Things would not have run as well without the help of Shirley and Tessa who did all the catering on the day and Pauline who did all the ordering of food beforehand. Because of a big birthday, she quite rightly, had her hands full on Saturday. Thanks also to Alan Borthwick for looking after the liquid refreshments, he seemed to manage without Tom who was on holiday

Martin Van Tol fly’s from the Netherlands to Scotland for a weeks golf ever month in the summer. He has a camper van and is based in Hawick where he is a member. He plays golf all over Scotland
