The E&L Trophy 2019
The Esdale and Liddesdale Trophy is one of the main competitions in the golfing season. Played over 36 holes, and part of the qualifying for the Club Championship.
Over the two days the weather was like Bassetts Liquorice Allsorts, a bit of everything. Heat and sun burn on Saturday and wind, rain, a bit thunder on Sunday.
It was not only the sun that burned the course on Saturday, Nathan Bell sizzled around the course in 68 shots for a net 66 and that included a penalty shot when he drove into the ditch on the 6th hole. A perfect round with 16 pars, and 2 birdies. Simon Tweddle was one behind with a net score of 67 and Gordon Rae nursed his sore foot around for a score of 71.
As described before, Sunday was a difficult day for golf with 6 no returns for different reasons. Not to my surprise Nathan lead the field but with a completely different score card. No less than 5 birdies offset by 5 bogies and 8 pars for a round of 70. These two rounds enabled Nathan to reduce his handicap to 1. His winning total 134 was 6 ahead of Simon Tweddle with Gary Paisley edging into 3rd place with 145 one ahead of Derek Johnstone.
Derek took the honours in the Mid-Week Stableford with 20 points.
There was a rumour going round that the oldest Member had scored a hole in one but it turned out that his hole in one was scored on the 6th hole’s winter green. If only he had done it in the winter compaction he would have scored 5 points...
